House lawmakers in December 2011 approved legislation that would prohibit the sale of synthetic marijuana and other drugs known as “bath salts” and “plant food,” which have been compared to dangerous hallucinogenic drugs when used illicitly. The U.S. House voted on December 15th to ban more than 30 synthetic drugs, including “bath salts” and “spice.” The Synthetic Drug Control Act would make it illegal to manufacture or dispense the drugs. 

The bill would also give the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) more authority to put temporary bans on potentially hazardous drugs as they are being investigated. The bill passed by a vote of 317 to 98, according to the news report. The bill will now move to the Senate.

The Drug Enforcement Administration took emergency action on Friday to ban three synthetic stimulants used to make products that are marketed at head shops and on the Web as “bath salts,” but are actually used as recreational drugs that mimic the effects of cocaine, LSD and methamphetamine.
